ESRT’s 2023 Sustainability Report – The Highlights

The results are in – on Earth Day! 

After another successful year of sustainability advancements and announcements, Empire State Realty Trust published its 2023 Sustainability Report to showcase its leadership in environmental sustainability. 

From its exceptional achievements to targets and progress against its goals for emissions and energy reduction, water, waste, and indoor environmental quality, the Sustainability Report shows just how ESRT continues to attract tenants and add value for its investors.

The Road to Net Zero

The Sustainability Report restated ESRT’s aggressive goals to reach Net Zero by 2030 at the Empire State Building and throughout its entire portfolio by 2035, in alignment with New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). ESRT maintained carbon neutrality across 100% of its portfolio and reported that it reduced emissions by 57% at the Empire State Building and 47% throughout the portfolio.

Third-Party Verified

ESRT received several awards and accolades for its achievements in energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality in 2023. The report compiled these significant acknowledgements which included the 2023 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award; BOMA New York Grand Pinnacle and Earth Awards; the top ranking by GRESB for all Listed Companies in the Americas and first in the most competitive peer group; 2023 Platinum Green Lease Leader; and the WELL Health-Safety Leadership Award with 100% of its portfolio WELL Health-Safety Rated, among others. 

Corporate Social Responsibility

Major goals, metrics, and achievements in diversity, equity, and inclusion were listed in the report, which included ESRT’s achievement as one of the first commercial and office portfolios to achieve the WELL Equity Rating through WELL at scale. ESRT was recognized as a Certified™ Great Place to Work® for the second consecutive year and reinstated its commitments to the United Nations Global Compact and the Women’s Empowerment Principles.
