ESRT Celebrates Black History Month
February 28, 2022
Empire State Realty Trust highlights holidays and occasions that are important to our colleagues, and maintains its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the company. We observe Black History Month to pay tribute to those who have struggled with adversity and fought for their freedoms, and to uplift those who continue to struggle to this day.
Celebrating History
Originally “Negro History Week,” the present-day Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) chose the second week of February to align with Abraham Lincoln’s and Frederick Douglass’ birthdays – both pioneers of freedom and civil rights. Through the civil rights movement, the week expanded to a month to honor the accomplishments, contributions, and legacy of the Black community. We observe Black History Month to pay tribute to those who have struggled with adversity and fought for their freedoms, and to uplift those who continue to struggle to this day.
Lighting for a Cause

For Black History Month, we celebrated with a special lighting ceremony with renowned film director, producer, and screenwriter Spike Lee to light the Empire State Building in green, black, and red on Feb. 25. The lighting was in partnership with the Fashion for All Foundation.
