ESRT in 2023: A Year in Review

With New Year’s Eve on the horizon, we can’t help but reflect on ESRT’s major events and achievements. From prestigious awards and accolades to engaging events for tenants, ESRT had much to celebrate this year.

See below for our favorite moments from 2023!

JANUARY

EQUALITY ACCOLADE

ESRT announced that it was included in the 2023 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI) – a modified market capitalization-weighted index developed to gauge performance of public companies’ commitments to transparency in gender data reporting – for the second consecutive year in January.

FEBRUARY

CONTINUED EXCELLENCE

In February, ESRT became one of the first in the world to achieve the WELL Health-Safety Rating across 100% of its portfolio for the third year in a row. ESRT additionally committed to the International WELL Building Institute’s WELL at scale program and its inaugural WELL Equity Rating.

MARCH

LEASING WINS

Major engineering firm STV joined the ESRT portfolio when they signed a lease for a 65,248 square foot space at the Empire State Building in March. To celebrate, the “World’s Most Famous Building” lit up in red and white for one hour on March 1. ESRT also announced that longtime tenant Claims Conference signed a long-term relocation lease for a 33,803 square foot space at 1359 Broadway.

ICONIC EXAMPLE

Actor and activist Kal Penn visited the Empire State Building for a chat with ESRT’s Chairman, President, and CEO Tony Malkin for his series on Bloomberg, “Getting Warmer.” Penn and Malkin examined how ESRT vastly reduced carbon emissions at the iconic building and how it sets the standard for decarbonization in the built environment.

APRIL

KEEP IT UP

To honor consistent ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year recognition, ESRT was awarded the 2023 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in April. ESRT’s outstanding leadership in environmental and public health initiatives receive continued recognition from third-party organizations.

PLATINUM STATUS

ESRT was selected as a 2023 Green Lease Leader by the U.S. DOE’s Better Buildings Alliance and the Institute for Market Transformation for the second consecutive year. As one of only six awardees to achieve the Platinum distinction, ESRT’s integration of high-performance leasing and sustainability practices contributed to the esteemed recognition.

SUSTAINABILITY HIGHLIGHTS

ESRT released its annual Sustainability Report to highlight its major achievements, goals, and transparent metrics for Sustainability throughout the previous year. The company reported major milestones such as its carbon neutrality across its entire portfolio and publication of the “Empire Building Playbook: An Owner’s Guide to Low Carbon Retrofits,” among others.

MAY

POWERHOUSE PAIR

Commercial Observer named ESRT’s Chairman, President, and CEO Tony Malkin and EVP, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Financial Officer Christina Chiu as part of commercial real estate’s most powerful individuals in the 2023 Power 100 list. The publication’s annual Power 100 list recognizes and honors key influencers who drive the future of the commercial real estate industry.

LONG LEASE

Rising Ground – a leading nonprofit organization in human services for children, adults, and families in the greater New York City area – signed a 30-year lease for a full floor, 29,566 square foot space at 1333 Broadway.

JUNE

ICONIC DEALS

ESRT announced that it signed two new long-term leases with Skanska and Aprio for a total of 40,000 square feet at the Empire State Building.

JULY

CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS

ESRT announced that it opened a new all-hands space at 1400 Broadway, and unveiled plans for an outdoor rooftop deck and function space with sweeping city and Empire State Building views at 1333 Broadway. The new office amenities will be new features for all tenants at ESRT’s Broadway Campus that includes its properties at 1333 Broadway , 1350 Broadway, 1359 Broadway, 1400 Broadway, 501 Seventh Avenue, 111 W. 33rd Street, and the Empire State Building.

NEW LEASES

Capco – a global financial technology and management consultancy – signed a new long-term lease for a 26,620 square foot space at the Empire State Building. ESRT also welcomed Club Pilates and A Cut Above 7 to the retail portfolio at 501 Seventh Avenue and renewed a lease with AT&T at 250 West 57th Street.

AUGUST

SEPTEMBER

TOP RETAIL

The Starbucks Reserve Empire State Building Store played host to the 25th annual REBNY Deal of the Year Awards which celebrated outstanding achievements in retail leasing throughout the year. ESRT’s mascot, Emma Pire, joined in on the fun at the cocktail party.

OCTOBER

The Empire State Building’s TikTok account reached one million followers – the first observatory to accomplish this feat – in October.

NOVEMBER

Fashion brand Kith released a New York Knicks x Kith collection in November that featured photos of notable Knicks players shot at the Empire State Building and 1333 Broadway.

LEGAL HONOR

ESRT was awarded Best Proxy Statement (Small Cap) at this year’s Corporate Governance awards hosted by Governance Intelligence. The honor was recognized on an electronic billboard in Times Square.

DECEMBER

HONORARY AGENT

Celebrity broker Ryan Serhant visited the Empire State Building to tour its 78th floor availability in early December. Serhant lauded the space for its 360-degree views and location, plus the building’s unmatched amenities and sustainability measures.

AMONG THE GREATS

Newsweek named ESRT one of America’s Most Responsible Companies in 2023 for its outstanding work in sustainability and energy efficiency.
